Warm Tribute

13 January 2010

Over 200 people from the shipping community braved snow and ice to pay tribute to the late Jon Marshall, the Clarksons dry cargo broker who died at the end of November at the age of only 56, at the memorial service held today at St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate. The Baltic Exchange was well represented as were the London Greek, Norwegian and Canadian forestry interests who were among Jon’s major clients. Jon had been with Clarksons since 1980, working the deep sea market primarily, and in recent years had also taken on responsibility for the company’s training scheme.

The lesson was movingly read by Jon’s daughter, Jenny, currently studying at Cambridge University, and the tribute was given by the head of Clarksons’ Container Division, Graeme Murray, who highlighted Jon’s qualities of humility, thoughtfulness for others and high moral standards, as well as his love of music. “We used to say ‘There’s only one Jonny Marshall,” said Graeme, “and there always will be.”

The service was followed by a reception at Clarksons’ London HQ.
